Installing a device-description file helps the engineering tool understand a product. It does not automatically configure the correct I/O sizes, slots, revisions, or parameters. Compare the resulting project with the installed device instead of treating file installation as completed commissioning.

What is happening?
EDS and GSDML belong to different industrial-network ecosystems and describe device capabilities in their respective formats. The selected device variant and module arrangement still matter. A descriptor can be valid while being unsuitable for the exact hardware or configuration being commissioned.
Check these five things

Obtain the descriptor from the manufacturer for the exact device and supported firmware range.

Confirm the engineering tool accepted the file and identify the resulting catalog entry.

Compare the selected variant, modules, slots, and I/O data layout with the hardware manual.

Read the controller's detailed configuration or connection diagnostic rather than only the offline catalog view.

Validate the mapped data and device behavior through the approved integration test.
Worked example
A project recognizes an adapter after its description file is installed, but the configured input size still differs from the device's selected assembly. Recognition and connection configuration are separate milestones.

The mistake to avoid
Do not download an unverified descriptor from a random archive when the manufacturer's supported file is available. Revision provenance belongs in the project record.
How to verify the fix
Save the descriptor version and accepted configuration, then prove both communication and the meaning of the exchanged data.
