Moving a cable to an empty switch port does not guarantee the same network connection. Ports can belong to different VLANs or have different security and industrial-network settings. Compare the port configuration before declaring the cable or PLC faulty.

What is happening?
A physical link indicates that Ethernet signaling is established, not that the device is in the intended logical network. VLAN membership, tagging expectations, access controls, and port status affect the usable path. A spare port may deliberately be disabled or assigned to another system.
Check these five things

Record the original and new switch ports and the time communication changed.

Have the authorized network owner compare VLAN membership, tagging, and relevant port policy.

Check link and error counters separately from application connection status.

Verify the device's addressing against the network actually presented by the port.

Restore or configure the approved connection through change control and update the port map.
Worked example
A maintenance laptop works on one cabinet port but cannot reach the PLC from the adjacent port. The second port belongs to a different VLAN. Replacing the patch cable would not change that logical separation.

The mistake to avoid
Copying a neighboring port's configuration without checking its purpose can disrupt another network function. Port roles should come from the design.
