Matching an old device's IP address may not be enough to commission its PROFINET replacement. The configured device name and the controller's expected hardware must also match the installation. Read the controller diagnostics before assuming the replacement is defective.

What is happening?
PROFINET device identification and commissioning use the configured device name as part of establishing the expected relationship. Replacement behavior depends on the controller, topology configuration, device capabilities, and project settings. Automatic replacement features are conditional; they are not a guarantee for every new unit.
Check these five things

Compare the replacement's order number, firmware compatibility, installed modules, and slot arrangement with the approved project.

Read the expected PROFINET device name from the controller configuration and compare it with the discovered device.

Identify the physical device carefully using the engineering tool's supported identification method and the asset record.

Apply the approved name and commissioning procedure during the planned work window. Avoid assigning a name to the wrong nearby device.

Review controller diagnostics for configuration differences, parameterization faults, and missing submodules after identification succeeds.
Worked example
A training project expects conveyor_io_01, while the replacement has a default or blank name. Giving it the old IP manually does not by itself establish the configured device identity. Once identity is correct, a mismatched module arrangement can still prevent normal operation.

The mistake to avoid
Do not copy the name from a similar machine without checking the active project. Similar equipment may legitimately use different names and configurations.
How to verify the fix
Confirm the device reaches the intended operating state, all configured modules are healthy, and the approved I/O checks pass before releasing the machine.
