RTD or Thermocouple? One Wrong Channel Setting Can Ruin the Reading

A temperature value can look plausible while the input is configured for the wrong sensor. RTDs and thermocouples use different measurement principles, and their wiring options add more opportunities for mismatch. Confirm the complete sensor and channel configuration before applying an offset.

What is happening?

An RTD is measured through resistance, while a thermocouple produces a small temperature-dependent voltage and normally requires cold-junction compensation. RTD lead configuration and thermocouple type matter. Selecting a generic temperature mode is not enough to establish that the channel matches the installed sensor.

Check these five things

  1. Identify the sensor from its documentation and part number. Wire count and cable color alone are not sufficient proof across all standards and installations.

  2. Check the configured sensor type, range, units, and lead arrangement. Record whether the RTD is two-, three-, or four-wire as supported by the module.

  3. For thermocouples, verify the correct type, polarity, extension materials, and cold-junction arrangement against the manual.

  4. Review channel diagnostics and compare with an appropriate independent reference under an approved test procedure.

  5. Test more than one temperature point where practical. A single-point offset can hide a wrong sensor curve or compensation error.

Worked example

A three-wire RTD connected to a channel configured for a different lead arrangement may show a systematic error. In another case, the channel can be correct but the HMI labels a Celsius value as Fahrenheit. Both can look like calibration problems until configuration and units are checked separately.

The mistake to avoid

Do not use software offset as the first repair. It can make one operating point look right while leaving the rest of the range wrong.

How to verify the fix

Document the sensor type, wiring mode, units, and comparison results. Confirm the reading remains credible through the expected operating range.
