Two-Wire Sensor Won\’t Turn the PLC Input Off? Check Leakage Current

A two-wire sensor is not an ideal dry contact. It needs operating energy and can pass a small current even in its off state. If the input circuit is sensitive enough, that current can prevent a clean off indication. Compare electrical specifications before blaming the program.

What is happening?
Off-state leakage and on-state residual voltage are separate compatibility limits. Leakage affects whether the load releases; residual voltage reduces the voltage available to the load when the sensor conducts. The acceptable values depend on the particular sensor, input circuit, supply, and wiring arrangement.
Check these five things

Identify whether the device is a two-wire electronic sensor or a mechanical contact. Confirm its exact output specification.

Compare maximum leakage with the input module's documented off-state limits. Use worst-case specified values rather than a typical marketing number.

Check the on-state voltage budget as well. Solving the off-state behavior does not prove that the input will reliably turn on.

Review the complete circuit for indicators, parallel devices, and shared returns that can add another current path.

If an interface or load adjustment is required, use the manufacturer's approved approach and an engineered rating. Do not add an arbitrary resistor as a field guess.
Worked example
An illustrative input requires less than a specified off-state current to guarantee zero, while the proposed sensor's maximum leakage exceeds that limit. The pair is not proven compatible even if one bench test happens to work. Temperature and device tolerances can expose the mismatch later.

The mistake to avoid
A high-impedance meter reading alone may not describe the circuit under its actual load. Measurement interpretation needs the module's input characteristics.
How to verify the fix
Verify on and off states across the approved operating conditions and document the compatible part numbers. A stable input should not depend on an undocumented field modification.
